- Check to make sure that all of your indoor and outdoor water faucets are not leaking. (A slowly leaking water faucet can waste up to 20 gallons of water a day.)
- Turn off the sink faucet while brushing your teeth. (Turning off the sink faucet while brushing your teeth can save up to 3 gallons of water per brushing.)
- Cut the time that you are in the shower by two minutes. (By cutting your daily shower by 2 minutes your can save up to 5 gallons daily.)
- Cut back your lawn watering timer by one day and make sure that the timer is set for either very early in the morning or very late at night. (on average, by cutting one day of water your lawn will save as much as 25 gallons of water. By watering your lawn at night or early in the morning before sunrise, the water will be absorbed more quickly and deeper in the root base.)
- Check that your sprinkler system is working properly and there are no leaks and or over spray. (making sure that your system is working properly can save up to 500 gallons per month.)
- Check to make sure that your toilets are working properly and make sure that they are not running longer that needed. (A running toilet can waste as much as 15 gallons on a daily basis. To fix a toilet is generally very inexpensive and will cut back on the cost of your water bill.)
- Every flush counts. An estimated 30% of household water usage is flushed down the toilet. If your toilet is more than 30 years old, upgrading to a low-consumption toilet can save you up to 4 gallons per flush.
- “Rain, rain...please stay!” Use barrels to capture rain from your eaves trough and save it for the next time you have to water your garden or lawn.
- Be conservative, cover up. Keep a cover on your swimming pool when it's not in use. This will decrease water loss due to evaporation by 90%.
- Wash only full loads of laundry. By washing full loads you can save from 15-50 gallons per load.
- Using a broom instead of a hose to clean gutters and driveway can save up to 150 gallons per day.
- Use organic Mulch around plant bases in your garden to prevent water evaporation can save 100’s of gallons a year. Most cities and Counties have free mulch programs.
