Challenge

The Ecologic Challenge is to save over 5 million gallons of water by December 31, 2010 at our Ecologic Shine locations throughout the United States.

Because every drop counts…

  • Five gallons of water are required to produce one gallon of gasoline.
  • It takes fifty to seventy gallons of water to fill one bathtub.
  • The average American uses one hundred gallons of water a day.

Water Crisis

Worldwide:
More than 1 Billion people worldwide do not have access to the minimal amounts of clean water, according to the United Nations data.

In Latin America alone, approximately 76 million people lack safe water, according to the World Bank.

Every year 1.8 million children die as a result of diarrhea and other diseases caused by unsafe water and poor sanitation, according to United Nations data.

By 2035, as many as Billion people may live in areas with severe water shortages, especially if they live in Africa, the Middle East, or South Asia, predicted by the World Bank.

In the US:

This crisis is occurring in our own backyard!

According to the US General Accounting Office, by 2013 at least thirty-six states across the country are expected to have severe water shortages of some kind and that is not counting drought or changing climate conditions. Forty-Six states are expected to be under drought conditions by 2013.

National Climatic Data Center reports in 2007, at least ten states were facing water conservation measures or dealt with drought disasters or states of emergency: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, California, Oregon, Maryland, Tennessee, Connecticut, Delaware, and North Carolina. By the end of August of that year, 42 percent of the contiguous US experienced moderate to extreme drought conditions.

The Great Lakes is the largest freshwater lake system in the world and holds one fifth of the worlds freshwater. Yet Lake Superior, the largest lake, hit record lows in August 2007.

According to the US Geological Survey, the United States uses about 408 Billion Gallons of water every day, 345 Billion of which are fresh water. That translates into nearly 149 Trillion Gallons of water used every year.
